Definition of Straws The strict dictionary meaning of the word “straw” is the stalk of a grain plant such as wheat, rye, or oats. Although only certain types of summer hats are actually made of straw, and although straw hat terminology differs somewhat within the hat trade, we are among those who use the term “straws” as meaning all the types of summer hats we sell which are made of straw and other natural vegetable fibers and those which are synthetically manufactured to simulate them.
