Lock's of St. James's named their hat styles after the customers for whom they were created. The bowler hat which they designed and sold in 1850 to William Coke of Norfolk, they called it a Coke hat. It was actually made, however, by the Bowler family of Southwark and gradually took the name of Bowler hats, as its populatity grew. The bowler hat was the first hard, rounded crowned hat. In the United States it was known as the "derby hat", and it was popular with all classes of tradesmen and artisans. It has proved to be one of the most enduring and successful hats ever designed. At the turn of the twentieth century, under the broad category of dress hats there were several interesting distinctions among hat styles. Stiff hats (bowlers & derby hats) were not flexible, they had been given a coat of shellac during their construction to stiffen them and they did not conform to the shape of the wearer's head. Derby Hats (bowler hats) were divided into stiff hats and flexible hats. The flexible derby or bowler hats had more give to them. They shaped themselves to fit the heads they were placed on.
