Tourist took the hats home and referred to them as "panama hats". Panama hats come in different "grades" or qualities. The hat weaving process determines the grade of the hat. Hat weaving is done entirely by hand and a great deal of time is required to weave a panama body. The finer the weave of the hat, the higher the grade.
